Limassol Carnival

The Limassol Carnival is the oldest and most well-known traditional festival in Limassol and across Cyprus. Over the years, it has become a key part of the city's identity, representing joy, creativity, and a strong sense of community.

Its origins can be traced back to ancient Greek and Roman celebrations and are linked to the Carnival season (Apokries) before Lent. During this period, people are encouraged to relax, express themselves freely, and prepare mentally and emotionally for Easter.

Similar celebrations exist around the world, with famous Carnivals in Venice, Nice, Patras, and Rio de Janeiro. These festivals share common features such as colorful costumes, music, parades, and a spirit of equality and togetherness.

In Limassol, the Carnival originally started with small gatherings in homes and informal street parades. Over time, it developed into a well-organized, large-scale event with decorated floats, artistic performances, and traditional serenaders.

Today, the Municipality of Limassol is the official organiser of the Carnival and is responsible for preserving its traditions while adapting them to modern times. Particular importance is given to the children's parade, which highlights the strong connection of younger generations to the celebration.

Despite social and cultural changes, the Limassol Carnival remains a vibrant and living tradition, passed down through generations, and continues to symbolize joy, unity, and cultural heritage.
